View serviceMost remote faults are batteries, programming or a blocked signal path. A few minutes of orderly checking usually settles it without a visit.
Test the wired wall control first. If the wall control works and the remotes do not, fit fresh batteries in every remote, check that the opener's lock or vacation mode is not engaged, then re-pair each remote to the opener following the sequence in its manual. Check that the short antenna wire hanging from the motor head has not been tucked up or broken, and test the remote from close to the opener to separate range problems from pairing problems. In cold weather, suspect the battery before anything else.
A remote that has stopped working is one of the few garage door problems a homeowner can often solve outright, provided the checks are done in a sensible order. The essential question at the start is whether the wall control still works. If it does, the opener and the door are fine and the fault lives in the radio path: the remote, its battery, its programming, the opener's antenna, or interference. If the wall control does not work either, this is not a remote problem at all and belongs with opener diagnosis. Barrie adds a specific wrinkle. Batteries deliver less usable capacity as the temperature falls, and a fob left overnight in a car, or a keypad mounted outdoors on the wall beside the door, is working at the bottom of its voltage range for months at a time.
Start at the top. The early checks are the most common causes and need no tools.
Press the wall button and watch the door. If it runs normally, the opener, the door and the safety circuit are all working and the problem is confined to the radio side. If the wall control does nothing either, check the power at the outlet and the opener's own indicator lights, because you are now looking at an opener fault rather than a remote fault.
What it means: A working wall control narrows the fault to the remotes, their batteries or the opener's receiver.
Fit fresh batteries in all remotes and any keypad, not just the one that failed, and check the contacts for corrosion or a spring that has lost tension. A remote that has been living in a cold car all winter can show full voltage indoors and fail outside. If two remotes stopped working within days of each other, batteries are almost certainly the answer.
What it means: Multiple remotes failing at once in cold weather points squarely at battery voltage.
Most wall controls have a lock function, sometimes shown as a padlock icon, that disables all remotes while leaving the wall button working. It is easy to trigger accidentally by holding the button. Look for an indicator light on the wall control and hold the lock button for a few seconds to toggle it, then test a remote again.
What it means: Remotes that come back to life after toggling the lock confirm the setting was the whole problem.
Follow the pairing sequence in the opener's manual, which normally involves pressing a learn button on the motor head and then the remote. Once paired, test from a metre or two away, then from the street. Working close but not at a distance is a range or antenna problem; not working at all is a pairing or receiver problem.
What it means: A remote that works up close but not from the street has a range or antenna issue rather than a pairing one.
Check the short wire hanging from the opener's motor head; it is the antenna, and it is often tucked up out of the way or broken off. Then think about what has changed recently: a new LED bulb in the opener, a new router or smart device, or a vehicle parked where it was not before. LED and fluorescent lamps in particular are a well-known source of interference.
What it means: A dangling antenna restored, or an LED bulb removed, will often fix a mysterious range problem.
Unplug the opener before opening the motor head or touching any wiring inside it, and be aware that a capacitor can hold charge after disconnection. Do not stand under the door while testing remotes, and never disable the photo-eyes to get a door to respond. If pressing a remote makes the motor run without the door moving, or the door moves unevenly, stop testing the radio side and treat it as a mechanical fault instead.
Cold is the local factor here and it is not marginal. Barrie's January daily mean is minus 7.7 degrees with a mean low of minus 12.4, there are 116 days a year below minus 2 and 53 nights below minus 10, and around 12 nights fall below minus 20. A coin cell or a small alkaline battery in a fob left in a car overnight in those conditions loses a meaningful share of its usable output. Wall-mounted outdoor keypads suffer worse, because they never come indoors at all. Fresh batteries every autumn is a cheap habit in this climate.
