Slack let the cable jump the drum

If the door stops unevenly, catches on an obstruction, or is closed onto a ridge of ice or a bin, a cable can go slack and hop out of its grooves, then wind back in the wrong place on the next cycle.   2. Find the origin, not just the damage

    Both cables, both drums, the shaft, the bearings, the rollers and the lower track are examined. A frayed cable on one side is regularly downstream of a seized roller or a bent rail on that side, and the origin has to be found for the repair to hold.

  3. Fit matched cables and reset the drums

    Cables are replaced as a pair in the correct length and rating for the door's drop, then seated so both drums wind identically. Drum set screws are torqued, the shaft is checked for end play, and corroded bottom fixtures are dealt with while access is open.

  4. Square the door and test

    The door is cycled by hand and checked for even contact with the slab, equal cable tension and rollers tracking cleanly through the curve. Opener force and limits are rechecked afterwards, because a door that was binding will have had its force settings raised to compensate.

Can I keep using the door with one cable off its drum?
No. With one cable off, the load is unbalanced and the door will pull itself further out of square with every cycle, damaging track, rollers and hinges as it goes. It can also jam hard part-open. Leave the door closed and book the repair rather than trying to run it a few more times.
How do I spot a cable that is about to fail?
With the door closed, look at the last few centimetres before the drum and at the loop through the bottom bracket. Individual strands lifting away from the lay, rust staining, or flattening where the cable has run over an edge are all warnings. A door that has begun to sit slightly out of square, or clunks at one corner on the first movement, is often telling you the same thing.
Do both cables need replacing if only one has failed?
Yes. The pair has done the same number of cycles in the same conditions, so the intact one is at a similar point in its life even if it looks acceptable. Fitting one new cable also introduces a length and stretch mismatch, which pulls the door out of square. Cables are a matched pair by design.
Would clearing the ice at my threshold prevent this?
It genuinely helps. Most winter cable calls trace back to the door being stopped short by ice or packed snow at the opening: the door lands unevenly, a cable goes slack, and it jumps. Keeping a clear line along the threshold, and replacing a bottom seal that has hardened and no longer conforms to the slab, removes the usual trigger.
