Spring work divides into two honest categories: adjustment of a spring system that is still sound, and replacement of one that is not. Springs cannot be mended once the steel has fatigued, so anyone offering to repair a broken spring is really offering to replace it. What genuinely falls under repair is re-tensioning a system that has drifted, correcting a poorly balanced set, and renewing the bearings, cones and shaft hardware around springs that still have life in them.
Springs are rated in cycles rather than in years, and one cycle is one full open and close. A household that uses the garage as its main entrance runs through cycles far faster than one that opens the door twice a day, so two identical doors installed on the same street in the same year can be at very different points in their life. The useful indicator is not the calendar but the hand test: a door that no longer holds position is telling you where it is.

A torsion spring loses a small amount of tension across its service life. It shows up as a door that has quietly become heavy and an opener that has quietly become louder. Where the spring is otherwise sound, correcting the tension restores the balance and takes the load back off the operator.
Spring specification is a calculation from door weight, drum size and travel. A door that has had a heavier insulated panel fitted, or a spring chosen by eye rather than by weight, will be mis-balanced from day one. It never quite settles, and it wears its own hardware faster than it should.
End bearing plates, centre bearings and the cones that anchor the spring all wear. Play there produces noise, uneven winding and lateral movement of the shaft. The spring gets blamed for a fault that actually lives in the hardware around it, which is why the whole assembly is inspected.

Bearings, cones, shaft and drum set screws are checked and lubricated with a product that stays workable in cold weather. Opener force settings and travel limits are then reset against the corrected balance and the safety reversal is tested.
