Spring replacement is the most common significant repair on any residential garage door, and in Barrie it is heavily seasonal. The springs carry essentially the whole weight of the door; the opener only guides it. When a spring breaks, the door becomes an unbalanced mass that the operator was never designed to lift, so the correct response is to stop using it and have the set replaced with springs matched to the door's actual weight and travel.
Springs are sold to a cycle rating rather than a term of years, and the honest way to put it is that the rating is a count, not a warranty on the calendar. Springs are engineered for a finite number of open-and-close cycles. Every cycle works the steel slightly, and eventually a coil fractures. This is ordinary wear rather than a defect, and it is why a door that has been used as the household's main entrance reaches replacement sooner than one that is opened twice a day.
Low temperature reduces the ductility of spring steel, so a spring already close to its limit is most likely to break on a hard freeze. Springs are replaced as a pair on two-spring doors. End bearing plates, the centre bearing, the shaft, the cables and the drums are inspected while access is open, because a worn bearing will shorten the life of a brand-new spring.
The springs are wound to the calculated turn count and the balance is verified by hand: the door must hold position at waist height and travel smoothly throughout. Opener force and limits are then reset and the photo-eye and reversal safety are tested.
